Here are some alternative and fun ways to stretch out your retirement income:

  • Have a skill for crafts? Are you proud of your knitted scarves? Sell your creations at local arts and crafts fairs or meet-ups. You can even sell your products countrywide online at etsy.com.

  • Sell your baked goods or even start a catering business. If your family always raves about how delicious your home-cooked meals are, there are sure to be others who would love to taste your home-baked pie or speciality dishes and would pay for it too!

  • Start a babysitting or nanny service or you could offer to babysit your grandchildren. Plenty of households are looking for affordable and trusted sitters to watch their precious ones while they are at work. If you love kids and have the energy to keep up with them, you could  offer babysitting services all day or even after school.

  • Start a dog-walking service. Dog-walkers can charge anywhere from $15-25 an hour and this is the perfect opportunity to get a little exercise in between. There are many families and individuals who may not have the time to take their canine friends out for a walk  during the day and they would appreciate the extra help.

  • Rent out extra space. After your kids have moved out and you find you have all this extra space, it may be a good idea to rent it out for a little extra cash. A growing trend is having fellow senior citizens move in together as roommates ala Golden Girls style or your college days.  Build camaraderie and friendships, while earning some extra income.

  • Share your skills and talents with others. You can start a business by sharing your skills. If you have basic math, English or literature skills, you can help tutor students. Or you could turn your former profession into a consulting business, such as human resources, marketing or engineering. Or if you have experience with tax preparations and qualified to do so, you would be an invaluable resource during tax season.

Reverse mortgages can be another way to supplement your current retirement income. It can improve your quality of life by allowing you to pay off loans and mortgages  and helping you with other bills. It can also be a financial source to fulfill any retirement dreams, such as a vacation home or a new car.
