2. List of Reverse Mortgage Counselors

As part of HUD’s requirement, potential borrowers must attend a third party HECM counseling session prior to putting in their reverse mortgage application. Counselors are available to help borrowers understand the reverse mortgage program. This list provides information about HUD-approved counselors close to you.

3. NRMLA – National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association  

The National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association (NRMLA) is the national voice of the reverse mortgage industry, serving as an educational resource, policy advocate and public affairs center for lenders and related professionals. Their mission is to educate consumers about the pros and cons of reverse mortgages, to train lenders to be sensitive to clients’ needs, to enforce their Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility, and to advise policy makers on reverse mortgage issues.

5. HUD – Housing and Urban Development

6. FHA – Federal Housing Authority

HECM loans are insured under the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) to protect both the lenders and the consumer.
